Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense “impulse” sound (i.e. gun-shot) or by continuous exposure to loud sounds (e.g. music). Over time, normal sounds may become distorted, tinnitus (ringing in the ear) may occur, and speech may sound muffled. NIHL is a growing problem with younger people as a result of exposure to loud music while listening to devices like iPods, attending loud concerts, and engaging in loud recreational activities like hunting.
Many users of portable music players (e.g. iPods, MP3 players) will turn up the volume until background noise is covered up. Earphones designed for use with these devices can provide exceptional noise reduction so that the user doesn’t need to turn the volume up. As a generally rule, portable music devices shouldn’t be used for any significant period of time with the volume control turned above the halfway point.
Musician’s earplugs are a product made to custom fit each person’s ears. They are comfortable, small earplugs that are not visible in the ear. These earplugs were designed specifically to reduce the volume of music without compromising the sound quality. They are an excellent idea for anyone who attends or performs in concerts routinely.
If your child is routinely exposed to noise, they should obtain hearing protection that is specifically designed for the type of noise they are exposed to. Hearing Evaluation Services dispenses a variety of noise reduction devices and can help you determine which type of hearing protection is right for your child.
