- If a hearing loss is due to a medical problem with the middle or outer ear then medical treatment by a physician or otolaryngologist is warranted. Children with chronic ear infections or fluid in the ears are often treated with pressure equalization (PE) tubes. After the PE tubes are in place it is important to keep water out of the ears. During bathing, shampooing, and swimming, the child's ears should be protected. Custom made ear molds are a comfortable solution for protecting the ear and can be obtained at Hearing Evaluation Services.
- If a child has been diagnosed with a permanent sensorineural (inner ear) hearing loss then they should be fit with hearing instruments as soon as possible in order to maximize their language development and school performance. For more specific information see Pediatric Hearing Aid Fittings.
- Using hearing aids in conjunction with a personal FM system is beneficial for children as the FM system helps with speech understanding in noisy situations such as the classroom. For more specific information see FM Systems.
